Difficult to tell. Maybe the problem comes from my own obj importer.
For sure I got different results when using 3ds models. But obj models are
better, and so far, they were always enough for me.
If we compare the textures of the "first attempt" crop and the
"original" Poser model:

One can already see that the large band, between the forehead and
the top of the head, is completely different. The hair of the "first attempt"
is oriented front to back, and the "original" hair is oriented right to left
in this area.
I think the problem comes from the exporter, but it could be the importer.

Yes. Sometimes, when a bump map is missing, I just transform the diffuse map into a grey scale image, tweaking contrast until satisfactory. It is not exactly the same but it works quite well most of the times. |
I took a look back, and it has to work. Because all bump maps (for the skin,
etc.) seem also to be roughly gray scaled version of the texture maps.
Then a bump map is different than the normal map I was looking
for. I made a mistake here...
So the good news is that my hair should be improved pretty soon, because
I got actually nothing to do, not even a gray scale conversion. _________________ DrNo

In between, Poseray gives the possibility to do displacement mapping using an appropiate image map. I am thinking that using a bump map as entry, I can displace the hair model enough to make it credible. I shall have to try. I suppose it follows more or less the same technique as the one used by Poser for its displacement mapping, except that in Poseray I can export the resulting mesh to POV-Ray. Only drawback: the mesh is going to be very heavy, maybe too heavy... |
I give up on this line of experiments. Displacement mapping in Poseray results in Out of Memory messages. Anyway, a good bump map is enough for most cases.
Is geometry shading the technique used by Poser when setting the bump mapping to displacement? (in the Materials Room) _________________ All the best,
